Welcome to Amazon FBA Masterclass
In this lesson, we will cover the core business model of Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon). We will look at how the supply chain works, the difference between Private Label and Wholesale, and explain the key fees associated with selling on Amazon.
What is Amazon FBA?
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service provided by Amazon that provides storage, packaging, and shipping assistance to sellers. This takes the burden of shipping off of sellers and grants them access to Amazon's robust logistics network.
NOTE Amazon FBA allows your products to become Prime eligible, granting you access to over 200 million Prime subscribers who buy with free 2-day shipping.
How the FBA Process Works
- Send products to Amazon: You ship your inventory from your supplier to Amazon's fulfillment centers.
- Amazon stores your products: Your inventory is cataloged and kept secure in Amazon's warehouses.
- Customer orders your product: A customer buys your item on Amazon.com.
- Amazon preps and ships: Amazon staff picks, packs, and ships your product to the customer.
- Amazon handles support: Amazon handles all customer service queries, refunds, and returns.
FBA vs. FBM: Which is right for you?
| Feature | Amazon FBA | Amazon FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant) |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping Responsibility | Handled by Amazon | Handled entirely by you |
| Storage Fee | Monthly based on volume | Free (your own facility) |
| Prime Eligibility | Automatic | Requires Seller Fulfilled Prime |
| Customer Support | Handled by Amazon | Handled by you |
Typical Amazon Business Models
- Private Label (Recommended): Creating your own brand name and custom packaging for an existing product. High profit margins but requires upfront investment.
- Wholesale: Buying established brand-name products in bulk directly from manufacturers and reselling them on Amazon.
- Retail Arbitrage: Finding discounted items in physical retail stores and listing them for a profit on Amazon.
TIP Focus on Private Label if you want to build a long-term, sellable business asset.
